Description

Fairly small antique Edwardian waxed pine single wardrobe with oval mirror in the door, made around 1910 probably. Moulded cornice above and drawer below. There are decorative features around the mirror and on the panels: swags and bows etc. Technically it should be called compo, apparently but gesso is similar enough and what it gets called in general. There's a working lock and key: it's a little temperamental but does the job. Wooden knobs on the door and drawers: replacements but they look well enough. Inside there are hooks for coats (this was its purpose) but a sliding rail has been put in to allow clothes to hang sideways: there's not enough depth for standard coat hangers on a normal rail. The cornice comes off but the rest is one piece so make sure you can get it upstairs! Condition is pretty good structurally: it's solid enough. The drawer looks like it might have been a replacement: very slightly different colour. Slight warp to the door but it stays shut with key ok. Cosmetically there are various dings, scuffs and marks though nothing terrible; the worst is a long score down the left side (see pics). The plasterwork is fairly battered in places but actually pretty intact compared to a lot of stuff from this period. The mirror has a bit of silvering in places and some faint milky streaks. Some old woodworm in the cornice which we've treated for good measure. Dimensions: 94cm x 49cm x 196cm (inside depth 39cm)
